Negroses.

Volume III.

Black Legacy isn’t just about those who came before, but also about the present and what we do with the gift we have today. We are not only the products of our ancestors’ sacrifices, but also the glory of them.

My relationship with my Mom and the relationship that she had with her mother is an example of that. They have always shown me the importance of shaking the table, causing a ruckus, and believing in myself no matter the odds.

One lesson that has always stuck with me, though, is that it is never too late to be the change or to allow a change to happen within you. Although the effects of ancestors' and loved ones' actions are present in our lives, it is up to us to be the change and to be that instigator for it within our present-day communities. Much like my grandmother, Mary Delancy, did her best to do with every waking breath she had, and much like my mother, Kenyetta Delancy, who refuses to let anything stop her.

This is ode to our ancestors. The ones that made it happen and the ones that still are. Happy Women’s History Month to all the amazing women in not just my life, but everywhere in the world who love and take care of these babies who needed it as much as I did. Thank you for being the instigators of change, for being the first loves of many sons, and for always fighting for a better day in a world that has been manipulated to tear you down.
