Art For Goons vs. The World

Robert Cunningham is a Los Angeles-based visual artist and the founder of Art For Goons (AFG). His practice operates at the intersection of documentary storytelling and archival preservation, focusing on the nuanced experiences and cultural legacies of Black and Brown communities.

Since founding AFG in 2020, Cunningham has dedicated his lens to the recontextualization of the "Goon" identity. By reclaiming a term historically used to degrade, he transforms it into a symbol of collective love, liberation, and authentic greatness. His work—captured through a blend of film and digital mediums—moves between the polished portrait and the raw, unplanned moments of neighborhood life.

Rooted in an archival mindset, Cunningham does not simply take photos; he builds visual records. His photographs function as both documentation and disruption, ensuring that the stories of the people and places he documents are not just seen today, but are held, studied, and remembered for generations. For Cunningham, the camera is a tool for service, used to create a space where his community can live in their greatness and see their own spirits reflected with intention and precision.

Much love,

Robert, Le Goon
