An AFG Mother’s Day Tribute.

A story from Itzel.

Mother’s Day is significantly special to me because I get to celebrate and honor my abuelita, Eva Delgado. My grandmother is the bedrock for our entire family. She represents unity, strength, tender love, and selflessness.

My grandmother and I have been inseparable since I was born. She left her home in Mexico City to care for me, as my father and I lived in Los Angeles. My grandmother has shown me how much resilience, compassion, kindness, and love I can pour into myself and others.

One phrase that has always stuck with me is “Algun dia me lo agradecerás.” (One day you’ll thank me for this). When I was younger and clueless about the world, my grandmother always shared her wisdom with me. I didn’t realize how much it would mean to me until my adult years. When life did get tough, I was fortunate enough to still have my grandmother’s comforting words.

My grandmother often speaks about her mother and all the sacrifices she made to raise her twelve children. The lineage of strong women in our families ties us all together. My grandmother raised seven children on her own and welcomed me with open arms when I was born. The immense bond we share is not only because we share the same first name, but rather by the life we have shared together for the past 25 years.

All the photos used for this project were shot on the Mamiya RB67 using Kodak Portra 400 120 film.
